Why We Started Kabook!

We founded Kabook! with a mission to help parents entrench a love of reading in children.  To make the nightly reading experience more personal, more pleasurable, and more powerful.

A note from Kabook! founder, Bram Hall:

When my son was a toddler, I endeavored to rush home each night in time for the end of the bedtime routine:  reading and snuggling. We read at least one book each night, frequently a couple, and sometimes more. While we snuggled after – still one of my favorite parenting memories – I’d ask, “Do you know what this is for me?”

“The favorite part of your day,” he would respond.

And it was.

As our children have grown older, we’ve read some of the hundreds of studies that say the number one thing parents can do to drive long term academic success is to inspire a love of reading.  Reading to children has been shown to support cognitive development, improve language skills, heighten concentration, and improve creativity, in addition to establishing a stronger parent/child relationship.  In his best-seller The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease says, “Every time we read to a child, we’re sending a ‘pleasure’ message to the child’s brain… You could even call it a commercial, conditioning the child to associate books and print with pleasure.”

We founded Kabook! with a mission to help parents entrench that love of reading in children.  To make the nightly reading experience more personal, more pleasurable, and more powerful.  Not to replace traditional children’s books.  There are too many great stories, from creative authors and wonderful illustrators, that children and families should continue to experience.  Rather, we want to anchor that love of reading in your child, to inspire them to read more, to stimulate the foundation that will help them uniquely in life.

We believe the personalization elements of our stories – both text inputs customized to them and, in many of our stories, the inclusion of their photograph digitally converted to look like one of our illustrations – forge a connection with the child that traditional publishers cannot recreate.  Your child is the hero of our story – in our text, and in our art.

But we didn’t just want to have cool technology.  We wanted to offer captivating stories and amazing art too.  Instead of writing the stories ourselves, then, we hired top children’s book authors and artists to write and illustrate our stories.  An awesome example of this approach is our best seller, Wanted, from the creative mind of author Gideon Sterer and illustrated by Erwin Madrid, a member of the DreamWorks Animation team for Shrek and the perfect fit for this fun medieval adventure where your child saves the kingdom from a witch’s spell.

And now some of the best parts of our days are hearing from customers for whom Kabook! is the best part of their day.  A majority of customers share that Kabook! stories have become their child’s favorite story overnight.  Some customers have captured that magical moment when their child opened their Kabook! for the first time and saw themselves in the story.  (You have to watch the video of one of these customers!)
